THE AZENAS permitem-nos fazer uma viagem à sonoridade rock tipicamente britânica dos anos 60, 70 e 80 com algumas reminiscências de jangle pop. Melodias com inclinações pop, mas que se permitem a ter solos de rock. Esta banda britânica é composta por Tom Stewart, Archie Noble e Ed Simons. Têm apenas 17 anos e tendo-se conhecido no liceu em Sheffield, Inglaterra, decidiram formar uma banda. Sheffield foi também o berço do futebol, desporto que continua a ser bastante popular.
Nota-se muito neste disco que se influenciaram em músicos e bandas dos anos 60, 70 e 80, no entanto, não se trata de um revivalismo automático ou genérico. As músicas apresentam uma frescura tão grande que é como se tivéssemos viajado no tempo dentro do De lorean e aterrado umas décadas atrás.
Esta preocupação de reviver o passado de forma autêntica também se manifesta na forma como a banda escolheu gravar e produzir o disco, como se ele tivesse sido gravado ao vivo, à velha guarda e sem grandes efeitos ou manipulações de produção.
Há uma grande qualidade melódica em todas as canções e uma sensação de indie pop, uma boa fusão entre o passado (especialmente no uso do piano a acompanhar a guitarra, baixo e bateria) e a linha mais alternativa do rock da modernidade.
A variedade de instrumentos é também de grande realce, especialmente no segundo tema, BE TRUE TO ME, há harmónica, belas passagens de piano, assobios melódicos e uma grande preocupação composicional em seguir a linha de verso, ponte, refrão sem soar demasiado planeado, muito pelo contrário, é uma bela música pop e perfeita para esta época do ano.
O terceiro tema, SYMPHONY IN READ, tem uma linha de guitarras bastante catchy que complementa na perfeição as vocalizações e o trabalho do órgão que aparece ocasionalmente para enriquecer ainda mais a melodia.
Em DAYDREAM MAZE e BORED BOY BILL BLUES é de destacar o uso de coros límpidos e harmoniosos.
O disco não contém nenhuma música que possa ser considerada “filler” e são onze temas bastante diversos, mas que compõe um disco de estreia de bom indie pop à moda antiga, unindo na perfeição o passado com o presente.
O nome da banda também reflecte a afeição da banda por músicos de outras épocas, sendo que o nome é inspirado no salão Azena (cuja fachada aparece na capa do disco). Este salão ficou famoso por ter sido o palco de um dos primeiros concertos dos Beatles em 1963. Esse concerto foi promovido por Peter Stringfellow, um promotor de Sheffield. Hoje em dia, o salão Azena é um supermercado e dizem as lendas que as assinaturas dos membros dos Beatles ainda são visíveis numa das paredes.
Pode dizer-se que THE AZENAS pegaram nas suas influências musicais e conseguiram criar um som com a sua identidade própria.

THE AZENAS allow us to travel to the british rock sound of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with some slight influence of jangle pop. Melodies with a strong pop component that also have some rock solos. This british band is formed by Tom Stewart, Archie Noble and Ed Simmons. They are 17 years old and having met in school in Sheffield, decided to start a band. Sheffield was also the birth place of soccer, a sport that remains very popular.
In this record, the musical influences from bands and musicians of the 60, 70 and 80’s are strong, however, it’s not a generic or formulaic revivalism. The songs are so fresh and creative that it’s like we were in the De lorean and travel a few decades back.
This kind of connection with the past is also reflected in the way the record was produced, old-school like it was recorded live and with no producing trickery of any kind.
There is a component of high-quality melodies in all of the songs and a feeling of indie pop, a perfect fusion of the past and the present (specially in the use of the piano that follows the leads of the guitar, drums and bass).
The variety of the instruments is also important, specially in the second song, BE TRUE TO ME, there is harmonica, beautiful piano passages, melodic whistling and a keen sense of following a melodic structure of verse, bridge and chorus without sounding the least formulaic. It’s a wondeful song and a perfect one for this season of the year.
The third song, SYMPHONY IN RED, has some pretty catchy kind of riffs that works very well with the vocals and the organ with the psychedelic vibe that enriches the melody.
In DAYDREAM MAZE and BORED BOY BILL BLUES the harmonious vocal chorus are also of note.
The record doesn’t have “fillers” and it’s comprised of eleven songs that have their own personal identity, a debut of good old school indie pop, perfectly uniting the past with the present.
The name of the band also reflects this affection for the past because it’s inspired by the Azena Ballroom (featured on the record's cover). This ballroom was the stage for a Beatles concert in 1963 promoted by Peter Stringfellow, a local musical promoter.
Today the Azena ballroom is a supermarket, however, a legend tells that the signatures of the Beatles band members can still be seen on one of those walls.
We can clearly say that THE AZENAS managed to be inspired by their musical influences and created their own personal sound.
