Uma noite sonhei que estava num parque temático folclórico e muito colorido. Um bocado na veia da Eurodisney ou Disneylândia, e que havia uma parada de nuvens com variadas formas e feitos. Adultos e crianças maravilhavam-se com as nuvens coloridas e frondosas que assumiam formas de animais, pessoas e até objectos. Infelizmente, apesar da maravilha que era esse espectáculo, o processo para ver a forma de nuvem desejada envolvia uma solução capitalista de ganho imediato, ou seja, pagava-se à empresa do parque para ver a nuvem na forma desejada. Não me lembro se no sonho paguei ou não para ter a visão que queria, se paguei não me lembro de ter visto uma nuvem em forma de amazona atraente, seja como for, era um espectáculo digno de ser visto.

As nuvens são muitas vezes associadas a estados oníricos ou veículos apropriados para a contemplação (metafísica ou não). Goethe escreveu um tratado sobre elas, muitos outros artistas nelas se inspiraram e inspiram. Depois há adultos que sonham com elas em forma de rato Mickey. De qualquer das formas, observar nuvens para algumas pessoas pode ter um efeito apaziguador. Flutuam levemente. Imponentes no céu, dão ao observador uma sensação de leveza e onirismo. A música consegue fazê-lo também de outras formas, dando a quem a ouve uma sensação de transcendentalismo natural.

Fragments du Monde Flottant é uma compilação com curadoria de Devendra Banhart, músico que já se apresentou algumas vezes em palco em Portugal. Com Fragments podemos contar com algumas baladas folk, peças instrumentais bucólicas que constroem paisagens amenas e músicas sofisticadas, tranquilas como o pop maduro e carismático de Arthur Russell. A compilação abre com um tema instrumental e bastante introspectivo do compositor Nihl Frahm e vai florescendo com o tema If I Were de Vashti Bunyan onde a melancolia e o sentimento de longing ocupam o seu espaço. Estes sentimentos transitam para o tema Fo Barro, interpretado por Josiah Steinbrick, um tema que não precisa de letra/poesia ou vocalizações para transmitir as emoções “choradas” pelas várias camadas de guitarras acústicas. 

Tim Presley com Aura Aura volta a toada para o folk mais tradicional com alguns toques psicadélicos que se insurgem timidamente ao longo da melodia. O folk continua vivo e bem presente com Livin on a Star de King Tuff com o seu timbre e melodia de voz muito característico e andrógino. 

Segue-se algum experimentalismo e aventura sonora à laia de alguma inspiração Ry Cooder com o tema Meridian Hawk de Adam Tullie. Já se avistam as pradarias e os pastos que dão a entrada subtil, mas majestosa, para a música sofisticada, complexa e celestial de Arthur Russel com a composição Not Checking Up. Esta tendência segue para Helado Negro com o tema Lentamente que brota da simplicidade para atingir várias camadas e melodias imprevisíveis ao longo da sua duração. É um tema cantado inteiramente em espanhol assim como a canção seguinte, Senora Diana La Ví por Diane Denoir & Eduardo Matteo com a voz aliada a acordes de inspiração jazzística e bossa nova. Passamos um portal para o som melodioso de Rodrigo Amarante, o multi-instrumentalista brasileiro que interpreta o tema That Old Dream of Ours acompanhado a piano cuja voz indica a necessidade do sonho e dos estados de espírito mais harmoniosos que continua com o tema Blossom de Matteah Baihm, por esta altura a flor já brotou e floresceu. Podemos contemplá-la no último tema, Raising the Dead por Jana Hunter, um tema que se destaca de todos os outros pelo uso de uma batida sintética que acompanha de forma competente as variações delicadas da guitarra e a voz melodiosa e fantasmagórica de Jana Hunter. 

Como Devendra Banhart afirmou no processo de curadoria do disco, ele reúne temas de demos de vários músicos amigos que admira, sendo que as demos são uma das suas expressões artísticas preferidas, muito mais do que a canção finalizada em si. O que disso resulta é uma comunicação muito pessoal de Devendra Banhart num disco que é intimista, ecléctico e sensível. Ouve-se bem na segurança de um quarto, sala ou em comunhão com a natureza, talvez observando umas quantas nuvens.

One night I dreamed I was in a colorful and vibrant theme park like in the vein of Eurodisney or Disneyland and there was a cloud parade. Clouds that had several shapes and forms. Adults and children were mesmerized with the fluffy and colorful clouds that took the shape of animals, people and even objects. Unfortunately, even though it was a wonderful parade it relied on the capitalist trading system of immediate gain, that means, once you pay you get to see the cloud of your choosing. I can't remember if I payed for my cloud but I don't remember seeing a cloud in the shape of a luscious amazon woman, however it was a wonderful show. 

Clouds are often associated with oniric states of mind or vessels for contemplation (metaphysical ones or not). Goethe wrote a book about them and they have inspired and still inspire artists and then of course, there are adults that dream about clouds shaped like Mickey The Mouse; anyway, cloud watching can have a calming effect on people. They float without effort and look majestic in the sky, they give their watchers a sense of onirism and tranquility. That effect can also be achieved through music that gives the listener a sense of natural transcendentalism.

Fragments du Monde Flottant is a compilation curated by Devendra Banhart and as such we can expect folk ballads, instrumental bucolic pieces that build peaceful landscapes and sophisticated yet tranquil songs like the mature and charismatic kind of pop by Arthur Russell. 

The record begins with an instrumental and instrospective song by Nils Frahm and the feelings start to blossom with If I Were by Vashti Bunyan, when the sense of melancholy and longing first starts to arise. They pass unto the song Fo Barro played by Josiah Steinbrick, a song that does not need lyrics/poetry or vocals to convey the emotions that are carried and "cried" by the several layers of acoustic guitars. 

Tim Presley with the song Aura Aura brings us back the more traditional folk with some psychadelic touches that appear timid like during the song. Folk remains alive and present in Livin on a Star by King Tuff with its timber and melody of a somewhat androgynous nature. Next we are offered some experimentalism and sonic adventure a bit inspired by Ry Cooder in the song Meridian Hawk by Adam Tullie, we can see the prairies and the pastures already that give a majestic entrance to Arthur Russell's complex and almost celestial music with the song Not Checking Up. This trend continues with Lentamente by Helado Negro, a song that is born from apparent simplicity but attains several unpredictable and complex layers and melodies. It's a song sung in spanish much like the song that follows, Señora Diana La Ví by Diane Denoir & Eduardo Matteo that is sung over jazz inspired chords and bossa nova. Then we pass a portal to the melodious sound of Rodrigo Amarante, the brasilian multi-instrumentalist sings the song That Old Dream of Ours accompanied by piano and evoking the need for dreaming and more harmonious states of mind. That need flows in the song, Blossom by Matteah Baihm and by now the flower has sprouted and bloomed. We can contemplate her in the last song of the record, Raising the Dead by Jana Hunter. A song that is a bit different from the others since it relies on an artificial beat that accompanies the delicate guitar variations and the melodic yet dreamlike vocals.

As Devendra Banhart as stated during the process of assembling this record, he compiles songs from musicians he admires even though the songs are demos. He claims demos are his favourite means of musical expression, much more than the completed song per se. What comes from this is a very personal communication from him to the listeners in a record that is intimate, eclectic and sensitive. It can be listened in the comfort of the bedroom, livingroom or in communion with nature, perhaps, doing some cloud watching.
