Quando se pensa em Power pop britânico dos anos 70 é natural que surja o nome de Nick Lowe. Além de músico, Lowe produziu bandas como The Damned e The Pretenders, assim como vários discos de Elvis Costello. É um músico versátil que toca vários instrumentos como guitarra, piano, baixo e harmónica. A sua música roça o new-wave e punk, mas sempre com a catchiness típica do power-pop.

O seu disco de estreia a solo, Jesus of Cool, lançado em 1979, conta com a sua presença enquanto músico, tocando todos os instrumentos, e também enquanto produtor.

Há vários temas que se destacam como Shake and Pop, The sound of Breaking Glass, No Reason com uma abordagem que pisca o olho ao ska e Marie Provost, uma música cuja letra se debruça sobre a morte da actriz de dupla nacionalidade canadiana e americana. 

Segundo o livro de Kenneth Anger, Hollywood Babylon, a actriz morreu em casa e durante os dias até ser descoberto o seu cadáver, Anger alega que o cão de Provost comeu partes do seu cadáver para assegurar a sua sobrevivência. Na música, Marie Provost, Nick Lowe serve-se de alguns versos de um humor muito negro para descrever a situação. Sendo ou não verdade, o facto é que o disco está recheado de humor de várias inclinações assim como riffs de propensão pop que são extremamente catchy.

Após uma carreira com vários álbuns de originais, Nick Lowe lançou este ano o EP Love Starvation pela Yep Roc Records/Pop stock. O EP é composto por quatro temas, Love Starvation, Trombone, Raincoat in the River e Blue on Blue.

Gravado durante uma breve interrupção de digressões, o EP conta com a colaboração de Los Straitjackets. São temas que se afastam completamente da new-wave ou do power-pop e que abraçam um som mais blues e rock. 

Love Starvation, o tema que dá nome ao EP, é uma balada com laivos de rockabilly, cuja letra evoca claramente a necessidade de amor, seguindo uma sensibilidade mais melancólica do que a típica de Nick Lowe. 

Trombone, segue a mesma temática com a inclusão de trombones e com um diálogo estabelecido liricamente entre as vocalizações de Lowe e as passagens do instrumento musical. 

Raincoat in the River é uma versão de Phil Spector composta por um pop extremamente catchy e reminiscente dos anos 60. O EP finda com Blue on Blue que segue o cerne temático do EP de desejo do amor ou amor não recíproco. É uma balada pop com uma letra simples, mas incrivelmente sofisticada na sua ironia.

Este EP pode entusiasmar os fãs do cantautor que se aproxima dos 70 anos de idade e cuja voz ou talento para compor canções parece não envelhecer.

Whenever we think about british power pop from the 70’s it’s natural for Nick Lowe’s name to pop up. Besides being a musician, Lowe has produced records for bands like The Damned, The Pretenders and several records by Elvis Costello. He is a versatile musician that plays guitar, piano, bass and harmonica. His music has new wave and punk tinges while maintaining the catchiness of power-pop.

In his debut record, Jesus of Cool, released in 1979, he plays all the instruments and is also the producer.

There are several songs that stand out such as Shake and Pop, The Sound of Breaking Glass, No Reason (that has a ska approach) and Marie Provost, a song about the death of the canadian and american actress.

According to the book Hollywood Babylon by Kenneth Anger, the actress died at home and during the days until her body was found, Anger states that Provost’s dog ate parts of her corpse in order to stay alive. In the song, Marie Provost, Nick Lowe sings some verses of really dark humor to describe the situation. Being true or not, the fact is that the record is filled with humor of various inclinations and poppy riffs that are extremely catchy.

After a career with several records, Nick Lowe released this year the EP Love Starvation through Yep Rock records/popstock. The ep has four songs, Love Starvation, Trombone, Raincoat in the River and Blue on Blue.

Recorded during a brief tour interruption, the ep has the collaboration of Los Straitjackets. The songs deviate from new wave and powerpop and embrace a more bluesy and rock kind of sound.

Love Starvation, the song that names the EP is a ballad with rockabilly leanings whose lyrics evokes clearly need for love, following a more melancholic sensibility than what is typical of Nick Lowe.

Trombone, follows the same thematic with the inclusion of trombones and a dialogue lyrically established between Lowe’s vocals and the passages of the musical instrument.

Raincoat in the River is a cover of Phil Spector. The song is extremely catchy pop and sort of reminiscent of the 60’s. The EP closes with Blue on Blue that follows the thematic core of the EP, the longing for love or unrequited love. It’s a pure pop ballad with a simple yet incredible sophisticated in its irony kind of lyrics.

This EP may interest fans of the singer-songwriter that is almost 70 years old but whose voice and talent for songwriter does not seem to grow any older.
