Leopardo comes from Switzerland with musicians from two cities, Fribourg and Lugano. Lugano is perhaps most known for being the city in which Herman Hesse lived for several years.
The band started as a solo project by Romain Savary with an extremely lo-fi and introspective kind of sound that generated its debut album, Di Caprio, whose main theme were love songs dedicated to a girl.
Di Caprio manages to create a sound of lo-fi indie that becomes unique by its psychedelic nuances that reminds us of the sixties. The record has little vignettes of an adolescent or young adult love, the memories of a certain walk, the first words, gestures or looks that were exchanged.
Di Caprio expanded the musical consciousness of Leopardo, a one-man project became a band with three more musicians joining in, Giuliano Iannarella, Noah Sartori and Blaise Yerly. The band toured Switzerland with bands such as Thee Oh Sees, Tess Parks and Acid Baby Jesus, and has also played through France, Belgium, Italy and Germany.
Is it an easy life?, Leopardo’s second album was mixed and recorded directly into tape, which gives a genuine and retro sound, helping to create a certain atmosphere reminiscent from the 60’s. The band gathers influences that range from Syd Barrett to Velvet Underground.
The lyrics spread over punk inspired chords in a lo-fi and garage kind of sound, expressing several emotions, from the sunnier and loving in Holiday of Love, to the more melancholic as in Alone on Earth and Fear.
The album closes with the theme, Chinese Army, that is mysterious and unpredictable, spreading itself on loose guitar solos, a quality that is present on other themes as well.
In this album, there persist a quality of introspection and intimacy that Leopardo had already reached in the debut album, and it endures through 9 songs of lo-fi punk that stay close to the listener on an emotional level.
