Os irlandeses Lankum são exemplo de que a música pode ser feita para o estrangeiro ou para o habitante do lugar, e dessa forma o feitiço é lançado para juntar pessoas. Constroem as suas canções solidificadas nas raízes folk mais tradicionais do seu país e combinam a contemporaneidade de outros subgéneros para criarem música, que procura na transcendência e no mistério o encanto para formar um compêndio, do qual saem canções que enfatizam as letras e cuja estrutura se apoia nos instrumentos tradicionais. Contam histórias fantásticas em cantigas de embalar, preservando assim a etnografia do seu país, exemplo disso é o tema Lullaby do último The Livelong Day, sem palavras, o instrumental, as harmonias vocais contidas e os sussurros falam o dialecto transmitido em sucessões de cartas pintadas (etegamis). Na Irlanda Gaélica dez instrumentos constituíam, grosso modo, parte da tradição musical da região, dividindo-se em instrumentos de cordas e sopro. O folk norte-americano teve as suas ligações e influências alicerçadas nas raízes do folk irlandês.
Ainda que poéticas, há líricas que levam para o contexto mais sombrio, tal como Willow Garden, cantigas macabras (murder ballads) que pertencem às tradições do folk irlandês e norte-americano, servindo de despedida do narrador que está prestes a encontrar o seu destino na forca por ter matado brutalmente a sua mulher. Se alguém deseja obter uma análise mais profunda sobre o assunto, a frase também pode sugerir um estado de limbo, a dicotomia de dois lugares em que se é nada e se é tudo, o tipo de enigma e identidade que encaixam no imaginário de Lankum. Os irmãos Lynch (Ian e Daragh) começaram há mais de 15 anos como Lynched, um duo de folk-punk experimental psicadélico, hoje é uma das bandas mais ouvidas na Irlanda, conquistando três nomeações no BBC Folk Music Awards 2016 pelo primeiro álbum intitulado, "Old Cold Fire". Lankum não é a típica banda folk / tradicional irlandesa. De facto baseiam-se na tradição das baladas irlandesas, bem como nas canções de cantautor. Mas o repertório de Ian (flautas, concertina, apito), Daragh (guitarra, piano), Radie Peat (concertina, acordeão, harmónio) e Cormac Mac Diarmada (violino, viola) também inclui a tradição folclórica americana, além de músicas como “Cold Days of February”, da lenda folclórica dos anos 60 Robin Williamson; e o hino anti-fascista "Peat Bog Soldiers" de Wolfgang Langhoff e Johann Esser e o tema “Drinking Song from the Tomb” - a letra do escritor de ficção de terror H.P. Lovecraft. Não se prendem somente ao registo tradicional e mais clássico, discursam também sobre temas duros sobre uma Irlanda contemporânea que luta com as questões sociais e económicas, e de identidade.
A voz de Radie Peat, suportada nas harmonizações dos seus três colegas e a performance ao vivo da banda, transforma as salas em autênticas cenas de filmes em que a música e a dança folk são o motor que cria o ambiente festivo e animado.
Lankum honra a sacralidade das músicas irlandesas tradicionais, mas permite que elas se metamorfoseiem, cresçam e respirem com o sopro da gaita irlandesa presente no terceiro álbum de estúdio 'The Livelong Day'. O quarteto define-se como uma banda que não sabe bem o que procura, mas une-se ao propósito colectivo que é reviver o genius loci pelas harmonizações vocais, interacção instrumental e narrativa dramática. We need in certain times, to have some sort of anchor that holds our humanity and affects our emotional side so that we can feel that - we are still - flesh and bone. Only by neglecting the automatism - that frequently arises to dominate us - can we return to the land of feelings. We need to be touched by emotional harmonies that waken the sleeping spirit. Music is one of those bridges that connects to other forms of existence.
The irish band Lankum are an example that music can be made for foreigners or locals and there is a musical spirit that connect people. They build their songs on traditional folk roots from their country and combine contemporary subgenres to create music, that seeks in transcendence and mystery the enchantment to form a compendium, gathering songs that give focus to the lyrics and the structure that bases itself on traditional instruments. They tell fantastic stories keeping and highlighting the ethnography to sing lullabies, an example of that is the theme Lullaby from their latest album The Livelong Day, without any words, the instrumental, the vocal harmonies and the whispers speak the dialect transmitted in a succession of painted letters (etegamis). In gaelic Ireland, ten instruments constituted part of the musical tradition of the region, dividing themselves in string and wind instruments. The north-american folk had its connections and influences based on the roots of irish folk.
Even though they are poetic, there are lyrics that takes us to a darker context, just like Willow Garden, murder ballads that belong to the traditions of irish and north-american folk, serving as a farewell from the narrator that is about to meet his fate on the gallows after murdering his wife. If anyone seeks to obtain a deeper analysis about the subject, the phrase can also mean a state of limbo, the dichotomy present in two places in which we are nothing and everything at the same time, the type of enigma and identity that fits on Lankum's imaginary. The Lynch brothers started more than 15 years ago as the band Lynched, a duo of experimental and psychedelic kind of folk-punk, but today it's one of the most popular bands in Ireland, achieving three nominations for the BBC Folk Music Awards 2016 with their first album, "Old Cold Fire". They do not only hold themselves to the traditional and classical, they also approach heavy themes about a contemporary Ireland that fights about social, economical and identity issues.
Radie Peat's voice is held by the harmonies made by her three colleagues and the band's live performances turns the rooms in authentic movie scenarios in which the music and folk dance are the engine to create a festive environment.
Lankum honors the sacred aspect of the traditional irish songs, but allows them to change, grow and breathe with the blows from the irish bagpipe present on the third studio album, The Livelong Day. The Quartet defines itself as a band that does not know exactly what is looking for, but that unites itself to the collective purpose of reviving the genius loci through the vocal harmonies, instrumental interaction and narrative dramatization. The band shows us that folk music can be unexpected, progressive but without neglecting its vital strength. There are songs that are followed by some sort of spiritual inspiration. Lankum can be the life and soul of a party in which we dance and celebrate St Patrick's Day, as it can be the soundtrack for a movie like Winter's Bone.
