A inquietude introspectiva de uma adolescência complexa e delicada transforma-se em verdadeiros psicodramas quando transpostos para uma tela de cinema. Narrativas profundas com subtextos densos que simbolizam os ritos de passagem de uma adolescência vivida e sentida no feminino. Foi com esse cerne intimista e extremamente feminino que Jennifer Reeder começou a escrever e a realizar os seus filmes. Profundamente inspirada e influenciada enquanto crescia pelos dramas de adolescentes de John Hughes, Jennifer criou o seu próprio micro-universo estético e narrativo de laivos surreais e de realismo mágico com um uso bem definido e criativo de alegorias e simbolismos.

A sua curta-metragem, A Million Miles Away (2014) foi nomeada e premiada em alguns festivais, como o de Roterdão e Sundance. A curta-metragem aborda a relação entre uma professora de coro musical e as suas alunas, construindo a partir de uma situação realista um clima onírico e surreal.

A sua incursão pelas longas-metragens deu origem a Signature Move (2017) e Knives and Skin (2019). Signature Move é um filme que aborda temáticas pertinentes, tais como diversidade racial, sexualidade e relações familiares. É um filme que tanto tem de terno como de cómico, sem nunca perder a sua raiz dramática e com uma forte e contundente mensagem que é deixada ao espectador para que a analise de forma livre e subjectiva. O filme centra-se na relação entre duas mulheres, uma de descendência mexicana e outra paquistanesa, cujo pano de fundo é o mundo praticamente desconhecido da luta livre feminina.

Knives and Skin aborda o desaparecimento de uma jovem numa cidade aparentemente tranquila, mas cujos habitantes parecem viver e subsistir em idiossincrasias que se tornam cada vez fortes, após o desaparecimento misterioso da jovem. O filme explora o surrealismo quase soturno dos subúrbios, características de realizadores como David Lynch e alguns filmes considerados de culto como Heathers (1988) ou Thoroughbreds (2017). A sua linguagem estética e narrativa pode ser considerada subversiva mas extremamente encantadora.

The introspective restlessness of a complex and delicate adolescence become authentic psychodramas when transposed to the movie screen. Profound narratives with deep subtexts that symbolize the rites of passages of an adolescence that is felt and lived in the feminine realm. It was with that intimate and deep feminine core that Jennifer Reeder started to write and direct her movies. Deeply inspired and somewhat influenced while growing up by watching John Hughes’s movies, Jennifer created her own aesthetic and narrative micro-universe with surreal tinges and magical realism with a creative use of allegories and symbology.

Her short-feature film, A Million Miles Away (2014) was nominated and awarded in some festivals like Roterdam Film Festival and Sundance. The short-feature approaches the relationship between a music choir teacher and her students, constructing an oneiric and surreal atmosphere from a real life setting.

Her incursion in long-features, gave rise to two long-features, Signature Move (2017) and Knives and Skin (2019). Signature Move is a film that addresses relevant topics, such as, racial diversity, sexuality and family relationships. It’s a movie that is both good-natured as it is comical, without losing its roots on drama, spreading a strong message that can be left for the spectator to analyse in a free and subjective way. The narrative is centered around the relationship between two women, one with Mexican origins and the other with Pakistani, being that the background is based around the practice of women’s wrestling.

Knives and Skin bases itself around the disappearance of a young girl in a town that seems somewhat peaceful but whose inhabitants seem to live and subside on idiosyncrasies that become even more extreme, after the mysterious disappearance of the girl. The movie explores the gloomy surrealism of the suburbs, which is a characteristic of directors like David Lynch and is also present in some movies that can be considered cult movies, like Heathers (1988) and Thoroughbreds (2017). Her aesthetics and narrative may be considered somewhat subversive but charming.
