O nosso lado sombra, se for alimentado, torna-se uma força demolidora ou construtiva se utilizada de formas criativas. Jogando com o nosso subconsciente, as energias que nos impelem a criar seja através da música, cinema, literatura ou outras artes, encontram-se materializadas nesta realidade através de fios condutores invisíveis que ligam o nosso império racional com o emocional. Existe uma multiplicidade de músicos que utilizam o seu lado mais negro para criar, partindo de um imaginário único e muito próprio, expondo a sua intimidade artística.
Asthâgul é um multi-instrumentista que cria cenários devastadores, mas sobrenaturais. Inspirado pelas visões fantásticas de H. P. Lovecraft, o músico de origem francesa compõe música de negritude avassaladora. O seu percurso em longas-durações iniciou-se em 2017 com Mystic Echo From a Funeral Dimension (também editado pela I, Voidhanger Records). Um álbum de black metal atmosférico com bastantes intromissões de elementos pouco comuns no metal tradicional e purista, como passagens ambientais e acústicas. Cedo se percebia então que Asthâgul não jogava por fórmulas e tradições, mas procurava o seu próprio caminho e sonoridade dentro do metal.
Eternity of Shaog é o seu quinto álbum e o mais recente que chama imediatamente a atenção pela capa com uma pintura de Alan E. Brown que também foi responsável pela capa do disco anterior, The Telluric Ashes of the Ö Vrth Immemorial Gods. Ambas as pinturas mostram-nos criaturas fantásticas que parecem existir fora de noções orientadoras e estruturalistas como a de tempo, perpetuadas pela espécie humana. A pintura para Eternity Of Shaog, intitula-se The Dracula Of Mars, unindo o misticismo de um ser popularizado pelo género de terror gótico com o universo da ficção científica, uma fusão lovecraftiana que tanto inspira horror como profunda atracção e magnetismo.
O vampiro de Marte tem uns olhos aparentemente inexpressivos, mas que parecem infinitos ao olhá-lo e contem todas as vertigens de um caos ordenado e sistemático em provocar tonturas existenciais. A pintura converge com a música, construindo um imaginário de terror cósmico e abrindo a caixa para que dela possam sair criaturas fantásticas. Uma delas é Shaog Og Magthoth, uma entidade criada por Asthâgul e que já tinha sido apresentada num álbum anterior intitulado Pandemorthium.
Em Eternity of Shaog, entramos num universo único onde o terror e a negritude são uma evidência. A confluência de elementos black com death é ornamentada por passagens inventivas onde abundam violinos, sintetizadores, efeitos sonoros e o kantele, sublinhados pelos vocais viscerais de Asthâgul. Existe um clima de ameaça constante que por vezes, é amenizado com passagens mais serenas e contemplativas que se tornam como cúpulas no templo da melancolia que é erigido ao longo dos dez temas do álbum.
Extremo, inventivo e ausente de fórmulas previsíveis e/ou genéricas, Eternity of Shaog é uma viagem a um universo negro e intenso que cria magnetismo pela sua constante renovação sonora e experimentalismo.

If our dark or shadow self is well fed, it can become a demolishing or constructive force when used in creative ways. Toying with our subconscious, the energies that impel us to create be it through music, film, literature or other arts, find themselves materialized in this reality by means of invisible connecting strings that unite our rational with the emotional empire. There is a myriad of musicians who use their darkest side to create, originating from a unique imaginary and exposing their artistic intimacy.
Asthâgul is a multi-instrumentistalist who creates devastating yet supernatural scenarios. Inspired by the fantastic visions of author H. P. Lovecraft, the French musician composes music of devastating darkness. His first LP was released in 2017 (also by I, Voidhanger Records) and titled Mystic Echo from a Funeral Dimension. An atmospheric black metal album with intrusions of elements that are uncommon in most traditional and purist metal, like ambient and acoustic passages. We soon realized that Asthâgul didn’t play by formulas or traditions but instead was looking for his own sonic path within metal music.
Eternity of Shaog his is fifth LP and the latest one. The album instantly captures our attention by its cover art, a painting by Alan E. Brown who was also responsible for the cover of the previous album titled The Telluric Ashes of the Ö Vrth Immemorial Gods. Both paintings depict fantastic creatures that seem to exist beyond the guiding and structural notions like time, perpetuated by humankind. The painting for Eternity of Shaog is called The Dracula Of Mars, mixing the mysticism of a creature popularized by the genre of gothic terror with the universe of sci-fi, a Lovecraftian kind of fusion that both inspires horror as well as attraction and magnetism.
The Martian vampire has seemingly inexpressive eyes that however seem infinite while we gaze at them and contain all the vertigo of an ordinate and systematic chaos that causes existential dizziness. The painting converges with the music, constructing an ambience of cosmic horror and opening a box so that from it, several fantastic creatures can come to life. One of them is Shaog Og Magthoth, an entity created by Asthâgul and who was already presented in a previous album titled Pandemorthium.
In Eternity Of Shaog we enter a unique universe where horror and darkness are evident. The confluence of black and death elements is garnished by inventive passages where violins, synths, sound effects and kantele are abundant, and all is highlighted by the visceral vocals. There is an overpowering omnious climate that is sometimes softened by serene and contemplative passages that become like domes in the temple of melancholy that is erected along the ten themes of the album.
Extreme, inventive and without predictable or generic formulas, Eternity of Shaog is a voyage through a dark and intense universe that creates magnetism by its constant sonic renewal and experimentalism.
